Immortal Poets eBook Christopher Burns Reviews

Beautiful collection. Includes interesting biographical information as well about the poets. Nicely organized chronologically.
Outstanding. One of my all time favorite books. Thank you C. Burns for writing it. In digital, it is the easiest book to use out there.
The author's fine penchant for story telling makes this an unusually enjoyable collection of poetry. Not only is his choice of poems superb, but his stories about the poets are fine reading in themselves. It's the sort of book to take on a long vacation when you have plenty of reading time divided into short stretches.
The best poetry collection in my modest collection (100 or so books). A little bit about the period and then a sampling of poets and a sampling of their poems.
I read to my new lady friend by way of showing my sensitive side.
It's impossible to assemble an anthology of poetry that will please everyone. However, this anthology goes a long way in that direction. I majored in English in college and developed a love for poetry, and as I read many of the same poems again at 80 years of age I recall how little I knew of life then. I'm so happy I bought this book and was able to reread "Lines composed a few miles above Tintern Abbey", "I wandered lonely as a cloud", and "The world is too much with us", by William Wordsworth. It's as if several centuries of the production of the greatest minds to employ the English are found in this book. Thank you Mr. Burns.
This is an excellent anthology of great poems. The range of selections is especially good; not all are very well known classics, and it is a pleasure to discover some new works that are well worthy of inclusion. Burns's biographical notes and other comments are most interesting, and his judgments on poetry are uniformly astute and knowledgable. Naturally, in such a very large collection, not every poem is something that I would consider worthwhile, but I definitely would not expect, or even desire, that. I own quite a number of poetry anthologies, but I think that this is probably the best of them.
Immortal gives you a wonderful out line of the best in English written poetry from just after Chancer and Shakespeare up to about 1930. The book is a who's who of English written work with wonder short biographies at the start of each author's work. It is a great over view of English written poem for all who speak English or who are learning it. The examples are nicely presented. They range from She walks in Beauty by Lord Byron to How Do I Love Thee by Elizabeth Browning to Sympathy by Paul Lawrence Dunbar to I, Too Sing America by Langston Hughes, to Politics by William Butler Yeats to Sleepless by Sarah Teasdale to The Road Not Taken by Road by Robert Frost to when god lets my body be by e e cummings, It has a awesome range of poets in-between from Dickinson to Whitman and Longfellow, and Poe. All the greats you want to read.
