I was on this bus trip! Having Ross track me down after all these years was amazing in itself...then to reveal he was writing a memoir of our trip was exciting. As I might have been the youngest at 17, I was not yet a wise enough traveler to keep a journal. Reading this fascinating and fun book has brought back so many memories...he has put names to places I know I saw, but had long forgotten. It is a detailed description of our journey that includes lots of local lore and history. It is about a time and places long gone...we could not make this trip today! If you are interested in the countries on our route, this is an excellent read! Thanks Ross!Product details

The Red Bus Copenhagen to Kathmandu 1971 Ross McKnight 9781544803159 Books Reviews
Full disclosure, the author is a friend of mine, and I got my copy from him. That being said, I really love this story, that takes place at a time in my life when I would have probably not been ready to take such a leap of faith as these young people did, but would have been captivated by the romance of it. The fact that this route would not be open to foreigners for many years after they barely got across the right border at the right time, if indeed it still is, makes this an important slice of life across three continents that I found fascinating. Just the part about the hashish dealer in Afghanistan makes it wonderful, and the wrap up at the end, where we find out how life turned out for some of them, closes the story and makes me want to go find that bus. -{)}
